Heavy Metal Briefs 2013

Long Overdue

Since I don't listen to all that much pure heavy metal these days, this post is long overdue.

darkWaters: Golden Age of Decadence
3.5 out of 5 stars

DarkWaters is a mix of Pantera and Guns 'N' Roses. It took me a while to warm up to it. They do not start the record on a positive note, and I have no soft spot for GNR. But after a while the genuine enthusiasm of this Portuguese band is contagious.

Switchblade: Heavy Weapons
2 out of 5 stars

This isn't the Swedish drone/doom band, but a different Switchblade. They play traditional metal that checks all the right boxes, almost slavishly working to sound just like Priest, but for some reason the end product betrays all that effort with mediocrity.

Killers Lodge: Unnecessary I
3.5 out of 5 stars

Italy doesn't get a lot of respect among metalheads, but there are a handful of bands that go against the power metal grain. Killers Lodge is one such band, playing heavy/speed metal with gruff vocals. Arkhamin Kirjasto is a close comparison. This record is a party.
